How Much Is A 1944 Penny Worth?

Most 1944 pennies are not worth significantly more than face value, which is one cent. However, there are a few key dates and mintmark varieties that can be more valuable to collectors.

1944 Steel Cent

The 1944 steel cent is the most common wheat penny from that year. It was made of steel coated in zinc due to copper rationing during World War 2. Most well-circulated examples are worth around 5 cents, while mint condition ones can sell for $1-2.

1944-D Bronze Penny

The 1944-D penny is considered a key date due to its low mintage of 8,120,000 coins. Well-worn specimens are worth $1-2, while higher grades can bring $10-20. In certified mint state (MS+) condition, a 1944-D Lincoln cent can sell for over $100.

1944-S Bronze Penny

The 1944-S has a mintage of 5,337,500 coins which is fairly low compared to typical Philadelphia mint penny production. Coins in lower grades are worth $2-5, while uncirculated examples can sell for over $50 in gem BU/MS grades if the surfaces are flawless.

So in summary, a 1944 penny is unlikely to be highly valuable unless it has the D mintmark from Denver or S mintmark from San Francisco in top condition. Most common steel cents will be worth under $1.
