Here are the basic steps to draw a seashell:
- Start with a curved line sweeping from the bottom left to the top right to form the basic coil shape of the shell.
- Add additional overlapping curved lines following the same sweeping pattern to build up layers and thickness, spacing them closer together as you move up the shell.
- Sketch in the prominent ridges or fluting that spirals up the shell with wavy curved lines.
- Add fine detailed lines radiating out from the ridges to represent the shell's texture and patterning.
- Refine the edges and shading to define the 3D form. You can use hatches or cross-hatching to shade recessed areas.
- Add color, highlights, shadows for realism if desired. For a simple outline drawing, leave white for highlights on the ridges.
Pay attention to the gradual changes in size, width and spacing of the coils as they twist upwards. Blending or softening lines with a tissue or finger can also help give it a worn, natural appearance.
