Here are the basic steps to draw a sunset:
- Start with the horizon line at the bottom of the page. This can be a straight line or curved depending on your perspective.
- Add an orange or yellow circle for the sun just peeking below the horizon. You can shade it lighter at the top to show its glow.
- Above the sun, layer colors to show the sunset sky. Start with orange closer to the sun fading to yellow, then add pink and a light purple or blue further up.
- Add wispy clouds in lighter colors like white, light gray or pink near the sun. Softer puffy clouds in the upper sky will make it look more realistic.
- Optionally add hints of buildings, trees or hills in dark silhouettes along the horizon to set the scene. Keep them simple with few details.
- Blend and layer the colors smoothly with your finger or a tissue. You can also use a brush to add texture to the clouds.
- Sign and date your finished sunset painting! Admire your work as the "sun" sets on your artwork.
