Here are the basic steps to draw a torso:
- Start by lightly sketching an egg shape for the rib cage area. The bottom of the egg shape will be where the hips begin.
- Add a neck coming out of the top center of the egg shape. The neck doesn't need to be too long.
- Draw two circle shapes below the egg for the hips/pelvic area. Connect the bottom of the egg shape smoothly to the tops of the hip circles.
- Draw lines indicating where the arms will come out of the sides of the rib cage area.
- Add shapes for the breasts if drawing a female torso. Be mindful of realistic proportions.
- Add curved lines below the breasts indicating the contour of the abdomen.
- Add additional contours and details as needed like muscle definition, navel, etc.
- Erase construction lines and refine shapes as needed once the basic torso form is established. That's the basic process for drawing a simplified torso!
Be sure to check proportions and take your time observationally drawing real life references as well. Hatching and shading can also help define the three-dimensional form once shapes are laid out.
