How To Draw Locs?

Here are some tips for how to draw locs (dreadlocks):

  • Use a pencil to lightly sketch the locs. Start at the hairline and draw spirals or zigzags going back towards the crown and sides of the head.
  • Focus on varying the thickness of the locs. Some can be thicker while others are thinner. This will make them look more natural.
  • Leave space between locs to show scalp texture. Locs tend to clump together but also have space in between.
  • Add details like wispy hairs sticking out. Not all locs are perfectly rounded.
  • Shade the locs lightly with a pencil or charcoal to add texture and dimension. Leave some areas lighter for highlights.
  • Erase any unnecessary lines when finished. Blend the shadows with your finger if using charcoal or pencil.
  • Add color if desired using colored pencils, markers or crayons.

Remember to take your time and focus on the texture, thickness and positioning of individual locs for the most realistic drawing.
