How To Draw Torso?

Here are some tips for drawing the torso:

  • Lightly sketch the basic shape of the torso first before adding details. The torso is generally wider at the bottom and tapers gradually toward the neck and shoulders.
  • Indicate where the collarbone and shoulders are located at the top of the torso. The shoulders usually angle down and back slightly from the collarbone.
  • Draw guidelines for the rib cage which curves gently inward toward the lower abdomen. Make sure the rib cage is not too rounded or straight across.
  • Add detail lines to define the muscle groups and contours of the torso. Pay attention to how the muscles bulge and are positioned underneath the skin.
  • Refine the neck and indicate where it meets the torso. The neck will generally be narrower than the shoulders.
  • Establish the basic positioning and shape of the arms as they attach to the torso.
  • Add any clothing details over the form of the torso such as folds in shirts or other garments.
  • Take your time shading and blending to realistically render the form and depth of the torso.

Practice drawing simple torso shapes and proportions first before adding complex poses and details.
