To find the slope of a line, use the formula:
Slope = Rise / Run
Rise is the vertical change between any two points on the line. Run is the horizontal change between the same two points.
To calculate:
- Pick any two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) on the line
- Rise is the difference in the y-coordinates: y2 - y1
- Run is the difference in the x-coordinates: x2 - x1
- Plug the differences into the slope formula: Slope = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1)
Make sure to use corresponding points - the points must have the same x-value for the rise and the same y-value for the run. The slope will tell you the "steepness" and direction of the line.
