To find the standard deviation of a data set:
- Find the mean (average) of the data set.
- Calculate the deviations from the mean by subtracting the mean from each data point and squaring the results.
- Add up all the squared deviations and divide by one less than the number of data points.
- Take the square root of the result. This is the standard deviation.
The standard deviation measures how far the data points are spread out from the mean. A lower standard deviation indicates the data points are clustered more closely to the mean, while a higher standard deviation indicates they are more spread out.
