Here are the basic steps to get a passport:
- Complete and submit a passport application form (Form DS-11 for first-time applicants or Form DS-82 for renewals). You can find these forms online or at your local post office.
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a certified birth certificate or previous U.S. passport. You will also need to provide proof of identity, such as a driver's license.
- Include recent passport photos that meet federal requirements. These can usually be taken at retailers like CVS, Walgreens, post offices, etc.
- Pay the applicable fees, which can be found on the application forms or online at travel.state.gov. The fee for a first adult passport book is currently $110.
- Submit your completed application, supporting documents, and fees to an acceptance facility. This is usually the nearest post office, clerk of court, or passport agency.
- Once approved, your new passport will be mailed to you within around 6-8 weeks for routine service or 4-6 weeks for expedited service.
Be sure to allow plenty of time before any upcoming international trips, as processing can sometimes take longer. Check travel.state.gov for up-to-date wait times and help if you need your passport sooner.
