Here are some tips for getting rid of bed bugs:
Use an insecticide specifically formulated for bed bugs. Look for products containing pyrethrins, pyrethroids, diatomaceous earth or other active ingredients that are proven effective against bed bugs. Spray mattresses, bed frames, baseboards and cracks/crevices around the room.
Wash all bedding, linens and clothing in hot water (120°F or higher) and dry on the highest heat setting. This will help kill any bugs or eggs hiding in fabrics.
Vacuum thoroughly, paying close attention to mattress seams, edges and headboards. Be sure to immediately dispose of the vacuum bag after vacuuming infected areas. The bugs can hide in the bag and spread elsewhere.
Use a steamer or heat treatment method. Applying sustained heat of at least 120°F through steaming or professional heat treatment can kill all bed bug life stages.
Inspect secondhand furniture carefully before bringing it inside. Bed bugs are often spread unintentionally through used couches, beds and other upholstered items. It's best to avoid these items if possible.
Monitor for signs of bed bugs and contact a pest control professional if you find live bugs or persistent bites after treating. Repeated treatments may be needed to fully eliminate an infestation.
