Dandruff is a common scalp condition that causes flaky skin and itching. Here are some effective home remedies to help treat dandruff:
- Shampoo regularly with an anti-dandruff shampoo. Look for shampoos containing ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione.
- Massage your scalp. Gently massage your scalp with your finger tips when shampooing. This helps loosen and remove flakes.
- Apple cider vinegar rinse. Mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part water and use as a rinse after shampooing. The acidity of ACV helps control oil production and flakiness.
- Tea tree oil. Add 5-6 drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo or conditioner. Tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties that can treat dandruff.
- Keep your hair dry. Make sure your hair is completely dry before going to bed. Moist scalp can worsen dandruff.
- Reduce stress. High stress levels can exacerbate dandruff symptoms by causing excess oil production. Practicing relaxation techniques may help.
See a dermatologist if home remedies do not provide relief or if dandruff is severe. Medicated shampoos prescribed by a doctor may be needed.
