Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus. They typically result from straining during bowel movements or increased pressure on these veins during pregnancy.
At-Home Treatments
- Soak in a warm bath. Sitz baths can help relieve pain and itching.
- Use over-the-counter creams or suppositories. Products containing hydrocortisone can help relieve itching and pain.
- Take oral pain relievers. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) can help with discomfort.
- Apply cold therapy. Witch hazel pads or ice packs applied to the anal area can reduce swelling.
See a Doctor for Larger Hemorrhoids
If over-the-counter treatments don't help or hemorrhoids are large and painful, see your doctor. They may recommend a few treatments like banding, coagulation, or surgery to permanently remove hemorrhoids.
Be sure to drink plenty of water, exercise, and eat a high-fiber diet to help soften stools and prevent further hemorrhoid flare-ups.
