If water gets trapped in your ear, it's not dangerous but can be uncomfortable. Try these tips to get it out:

  • Tilt your head. Tilt your head to the side with the affected ear facing down. Let gravity help drain the water out. You can also gently pull on your earlobe.
  • Use a bulb syringe. Fill a bulb syringe with warm water and gently squirt it into the ear canal. This can help flush out deeper trapped water.
  • Use peroxide. Put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ear and tilt your head. The bubbling action may help dislodge water. Don't repeat this too often as peroxide can irritate the skin.
  • See a doctor. If water won't drain on its own after a few hours, see your doctor. They may be able to safely irrigate and suction out the water with specialized medical equipment.

Avoid putting anything smaller than your elbow in your ear, like paper, cotton swabs, or keys, as this can push water deeper or damage the delicate ear canal. Be gentle, and see a doctor right away if you experience ear pain, dizziness or hearing loss after getting water in your ear.
