Here are the basic rules for playing chess:
The Goal
The goal of chess is to checkmate the opposing player's king. Checkmate occurs when the king is under immediate attack (in check) and there is no way to block or escape from the attack on the next move.
Setup
Chess is played on an 8x8 checkered board with 32 pieces - 16 pieces per player. Each player begins the game with:
- 1 king
- 1 queen
- 2 rooks
- 2 bishops
- 2 knights
- 8 pawns
Piece Moves
Each piece moves in a unique way. The king and queen move one space in any direction, the rook moves any number of spaces in a straight line (horizontally or vertically), the bishop moves any number of spaces diagonally, the knight moves in an L-shape, and the pawn moves forward one space except on its first move it can move forward two spaces.
Taking Pieces
Pieces are captured or "taken" when an opposing piece moves to the space occupied by an opponent's piece. The captured piece is then removed from the board.
The first player unable to make a legal move, or whose king is checkmated, loses the game.
