Here are the basic steps for pruning weigela:
- Prune weigela in early spring, before new growth starts.
- Cuttings can be made any time after flowering to shape the plant and encourage more flowers.
- Use pruners or loppers to remove any dead, diseased, damaged or crossing branches back to their points of origin.
- Cut just above a leaf bud or side branch, sloping the cut slightly so water does not pool on the cut.
- Weigela can also be lightly trimmed after flowering to keep the plant full and bushy.
- Pruning after flowering encourages a second flush of blooms later in the season.
Proper pruning will keep weigela neatly shaped and encourage more abundant blooming each year. Be careful not to prune more than 1/3 of the plant at once to avoid shocking it.
