Garmin fishfinders are very popular electronics for finding fish underwater. Here are the basics of how to read a Garmin fishfinder display:
Sonar Screen
The main sonar screen will show images of what's underneath your boat in real-time. The top of the screen represents the surface of the water and the bottom of the screen is the bottom. You'll see arcs coming up from the bottom - these are fish or structure. The strength of the return signal determines the intensity of the arc.
Depth Numbers
Along the right side is a depth scale in feet or meters. This tells you exactly how deep the water is below the transducer. Look for changes in depth that could indicate dropoffs, structure, or other underwater features that attract fish.
Interpret Arcs
Small, tight arcs close to the bottom are likely hard bottom features like rocks. Larger, softer arcs above the bottom could be fish or weeds. Clusters of arcs are often good signs of fish holding in an area. Practice interpreting the arcs to learn to spot fish more easily.
Use Other Screens
Garmin fishfinders have additional screens like downscan and sidescan that provide high-resolution imaging of structure. These can help you learn new spots and understand underwater terrain for better fishing success.
