To refill a 1lb propane tank:
- Make sure the tank is empty by slowly inverting it and listening for the sound of gas escaping, which indicates it is not empty.
- Take the tank to a propane refill station, such as one located at many hardware stores. Propane for recreational use is usually available as a self-serve option.
- Check that the tank is approved for refilling by verifying the DOT number (should start with 1E) is stamped properly on the tank.
- Attach the tank securely to the refill station nozzle according to instructions. Different nozzles accommodate differently sized tanks.
- Turn on the propane supply and slowly fill the tank to the rated pressure, usually around 10-13 pounds per square inch (psi). Listen for gas escaping which indicates a full tank.
- Detach the tank from the nozzle and pay for the amount of propane added.
- Replace the protective cap securely and store/transport the filled tank safely and away from heat sources.
Always exercise caution when refilling and transporting propane tanks. Never leave one in a hot vehicle or direct sun and keep away from flames or sparks.
