How To Remove Black Mould From Silicone Sealant?

Black mould can easily grow on silicone sealant around windows, showers, and bathrooms. Here are some effective methods for removing mould from silicone:

1. Baking Soda Paste

Make a thick paste by mixing baking soda with just enough water. Spread the paste over the mouldy silicone sealant and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. The baking soda is abrasive and will help scrub away the mould. Rinse clean with water.

2. Vinegar Solution

Fill a spray bottle with equal parts white vinegar and water. Spray the solution directly onto the mouldy areas and let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping away with a cloth or brushing with a toothbrush. Vinegar is naturally antimicrobial and kills the mould.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

Pour hydrogen peroxide directly onto a cloth or paper towel and wipe down the mouldy silicone sealant. Let it foam for 10 minutes before rinsing clean with water. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective bleach that removes both mould spores and discoloration.

4. Bleach Solution (for stubborn cases)

Only use bleach if the mould refuses to budge with other methods. Mix 1 part bleach with 9 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the mould, let sit 15 minutes, then scrub and rinse clean. Take proper safety precautions when using bleach.

For prevention, ensure good ventilation and keep silicone sealant dry. Reapply a mould-resistant sealant every 6-12 months.
