If you need to rethread a bolt but don't have a rethreader tool, there is still a way to do it without one. Here are the basic steps:
- Start by using a hacksaw or cutoff wheel to cut new threads along the full length of the damaged bolt.
- Cut the threads at the same pitch and angle as the original threads. You can measure the pitch of the original threads with a pitch gauge or by counting threads per inch.
- Once the new threads are cut, use a file to smooth out any rough edges on the threads. File in the direction of the thread to avoid damaging the thread form.
- To start the threads, turn the bolt counterclockwise into the threaded hole by hand while applying pressure. This will seat the initial threads.
- Tighten the bolt the rest of the way with a wrench while applying cutting oil or grease. The threads should cut in as you tighten.
- Check that the bolt threads in and out smoothly without binding. You may need to do some additional touch-up filing if needed.
With patience and care, you can successfully rethread a stripped or damaged bolt this way without a rethreading tool. Just take your time cutting accurate new threads.
