How To Rethread A Bolt Without A Rethreader?

If you need to rethread a bolt but don't have a rethreader tool, there is still a way to do it without one. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Start by using a hacksaw or cutoff wheel to cut new threads along the full length of the damaged bolt.
  2. Cut the threads at the same pitch and angle as the original threads. You can measure the pitch of the original threads with a pitch gauge or by counting threads per inch.
  3. Once the new threads are cut, use a file to smooth out any rough edges on the threads. File in the direction of the thread to avoid damaging the thread form.
  4. To start the threads, turn the bolt counterclockwise into the threaded hole by hand while applying pressure. This will seat the initial threads.
  5. Tighten the bolt the rest of the way with a wrench while applying cutting oil or grease. The threads should cut in as you tighten.
  6. Check that the bolt threads in and out smoothly without binding. You may need to do some additional touch-up filing if needed.

With patience and care, you can successfully rethread a stripped or damaged bolt this way without a rethreading tool. Just take your time cutting accurate new threads.
