Reupholstering a bar stool is a relatively simple DIY project that allows you to give new life and personality to old stools. Here are the basic steps:
- Remove the existing fabric and padding from the stool frame. Use a screwdriver or staple remover to detach any staples or upholstery tacks securing the fabric.
- Clean and inspect the stool frame for any broken or loose parts. Sand down rough edges and tighten or repair as needed.
- Purchase new fabric and padding materials. You'll need a tight-weave upholstery fabric as well as batting or foam for padding.
- Cut the fabric and padding to size, allowing 1-2 extra inches all around. Staple or temporarily tack the padding to the inside of the fabric.
- Stretch the fabric tightly over the stool frame and use upholstery tacks or staples to secure it in place. Pull fabric taut as you work around the frame.
- Trim excess fabric and smooth any wrinkles. Hammer upholstery tacks at a 45 degree angle for a clean look.
- Your newly upholstered bar stool is now ready to enjoy! Consider adding new rubber tips to the legs if the originals are worn.
With some basic supplies and effort, you can easily breathe new life into old bar stools through reupholstering. The results will upgrade your home's style on a budget.
