Rewiring a trailer involves removing the old wiring and installing new wiring throughout the trailer. Here are the basic steps:
- Disconnect the trailer from the tow vehicle and remove the seven-way connector plug from the back of the trailer.
- Remove all of the old wiring from the inside of the trailer frame members. Cut wire ties and pull old wires out.
- Install new wire runs for all circuits - taillights, brakelights, turn signals, running lights, etc. Run the new wires through protective conduit if required.
- Install a new seven-way connector plug on the rear end of the trailer wire harness.
- Connect the new wire circuits to their respective light fixtures, brakes, and other components. Be sure to ground all circuits properly.
- Tie down all new wiring runs securely with wire ties to prevent movement and potential damage.
- Test all lights, signals, and circuits before use to ensure proper functioning.
With patience and care, you can rewire a basic trailer over a weekend. Be sure to follow all applicable wiring codes for your type of trailer.
