How To Tell If Eggs Are Bad?

Here are some ways to tell if eggs are bad:

  • Check the expiration date on the carton. Eggs should be thrown out if past the date.
  • Crack the egg into a bowl. A bad egg will have a foul odor.
  • Shine a light through the egg shell against a white surface. A bad egg will have a dark spot or ring inside.
  • Put the whole egg in a glass of water. A bad egg will sink to the bottom due to air pockets inside.
  • The yolk of a bad egg will be flat or have loose fragments inside instead of being round and firm.
  • The whites of a bad egg will be watery and thin instead of thick and viscous.

If you spot any of these signs, it's best to throw the egg out to avoid risk of foodborne illness from bacteria growth.
