Karate belts, or obi in Japanese, come in different colors to signify rank and experience. Here are the basic steps to tie your karate belt:
- Lay the belt flat on the floor in front of you with the outside ( printed side) facing up.
- Position the center of the belt at your belly button with about equal lengths on either side.
- Take the left side of the belt and wrap it around your waist to the back, passing it under the right side.
- Bring the left side back to the front and pass it over the right side.
- Take the left side behind your back and bring it back to the front between your legs.
- Take the left side behind your back again and bring it to the front, passing it over the right side that is now crossed in an X shape.
- Tuck the left end of the belt into the fold you created for a secure knot.
Be sure not to tie it too tightly. Practice makes perfect - with time you'll be able to tie your karate belt like a pro. Let me know if you have any other questions!
