Karate belts, or obi in Japanese, come in different colors to signify rank and experience. Here are the basic steps to tie your karate belt:

  1. Lay the belt flat on the floor in front of you with the outside ( printed side) facing up.
  2. Position the center of the belt at your belly button with about equal lengths on either side.
  3. Take the left side of the belt and wrap it around your waist to the back, passing it under the right side.
  4. Bring the left side back to the front and pass it over the right side.
  5. Take the left side behind your back and bring it back to the front between your legs.
  6. Take the left side behind your back again and bring it to the front, passing it over the right side that is now crossed in an X shape.
  7. Tuck the left end of the belt into the fold you created for a secure knot.

Be sure not to tie it too tightly. Practice makes perfect - with time you'll be able to tie your karate belt like a pro. Let me know if you have any other questions!
