Here are the basic steps to write a check:

  1. On the top left section of the check, write the date on which you are writing the check.
  2. In the "Pay to the Order of" section, write the full name of the person or business you are paying.
  3. In the "Dollar" section underneath, write out the amount you are paying in words. Spell out the amount, for example "One Hundred Dollars and 00/100".
  4. In the box below where it says "$$$", write the same amount in numerical form. For example, if paying $100, write "100" and "00/100".
  5. Sign your name in the signature line on the bottom of the check.
  6. If needed, write a brief description or note in the "Memo" section on the bottom left of the check.

Be sure to leave enough time for the check to clear before withdrawing the funds. And keep your checkbook in a secure place.
