To see how they run on Rotten Tomatoes, movies and TV shows are given a percentage "Tomatometer" score based on the critical reviews that the site aggregates and averages. For a movie or show to be certified fresh, it needs a score of at least 60% from Rotten Tomatoes-approved critics.
They take all of the reviews that Rotten Tomatoes deems credible from mainstream and notable publications. Each review is either a positive "fresh" review or a negative "rotten" review. Rotten Tomatoes adds up the number of fresh reviews and the number of rotten reviews to calculate the Tomatometer percentage.
For example, if a movie got 20 fresh reviews and 10 rotten reviews, its Tomatometer score would be 20/30 = 66%. So as long as over 60% of the reviews were positive, it would be considered "fresh" by Rotten Tomatoes. Conversely, below 60% it would be considered "rotten."
This simple percentage system allows viewers to quickly gauge critical consensus. Of course, individual critics may still dislike movies that are fresh or enjoy movies that are rotten. But the Tomatometer aims to represent critical opinion as a whole.
